چکیده

Checkland’s Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) can be used to support strategic planning for business improvement. This involves the development of system models to identify the activities that an organisation must perform to meet its goals. Jacobson’s Use-case modelling in the Unified Modelling Language (UML) is a requirements engineering technique that similarly leads to the identification of system activities, but driven by the needs of the system’s ‘users’, rather than those of the system itself. This paper considers the potential gain from using these techniques in combination, examining each through the same car-park example. It is concluded that SSM is a better starting point for the analysis of a business. It can therefore be used to enhance UML, but requires careful integration of the techniques and associated models involved.

Scene Image is Non-Mutually Exclusive - A Fuzzy Qualitative Scene Understanding

Ambiguity or uncertainty is a pervasive element of many real world decision making processes. Variation in decisions is a norm in this situation when the same problem is posed to different subjects. Psychological and metaphysical research had proven that decision making by human is subjective. It is influenced by many factors such as experience, age, background, etc. Scene understanding is one ...

Designing redox potential-controlled protein switches based on mutually exclusive proteins.

Synthetic/artificial protein switches provide an efficient means of controlling protein functions using chemical signals and stimuli. Mutually exclusive proteins, in which only the host or guest domain can remain folded at a given time owing to conformational strain, have been used to engineer novel protein switches that can switch enzymatic functions on and off in response to ligand binding. T...

The landscape of human mutually exclusive splicing

Mutually exclusive splicing of exons is a mechanism of functional gene and protein diversification with pivotal roles in organismal development and diseases such as Timothy syndrome, cardiomyopathy and cancer in humans. In order to obtain a first genomewide estimate of the extent and biological role of mutually exclusive splicing in humans, we predicted and subsequently validated mutually exclu...

Soft Systems Methodology: A Context Within a 50-Year Retrospective of OR/MS

Soft systems methodology (SSM) has been used in the practice of operations research and management science (OR/MS) since the early 1970s. In the 1990s, it emerged as a viable academic discipline. Unfortunately, its proponents consider SSM and traditional systems thinking to be mutually exclusive. Despite the differences claimed by SSM proponents between the two, they have been complementary. An...

Mutually Exclusive Expression of Virulence Genes by Malaria Parasites Is Regulated Independently of Antigen Production

The primary virulence determinant of Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite-infected cells is a family of heterogeneous surface receptors collectively referred to as PfEMP1. These proteins are encoded by a large, polymorphic gene family called var. The family contains approximately 60 individual genes, which are subject to strict, mutually exclusive expression, with the single expressed var gen...
